What is franchising?
Franchising has been around since 1950 and is still successful. Franchising is essentially the duplication of success. But what exactly is it? The legislative proposal of the Dutch Franchise Act defines a formula as follows:
"An operational, commercial, and organizational formula for the production or sale of goods or the provision of services, which determines a uniform identity and appearance for the enterprises within the chain where this formula is applied, and which at least includes:
- a trademark, model or trade name, house style or design
- knowhow, being a set of practical information not protected by an intellectual property right, derived from the franchisor's experience and research conducted by them, which information is confidential, substantial, and identified"
Why start a franchise?
Starting a franchise offers many benefits, both for you as the franchisor and your prospective franchisees. We have listed a few below:
- Independent entrepreneurship. Franchisees, as independent entrepreneurs, are fully responsible for the success of their own business. This often results in a higher level of personal commitment and motivation from a franchisee compared to that of a branch manager.
- Everyone does what they are good at. The division of tasks clearly outlines the expectations for both parties. The franchisor mainly focuses on the development of the brand and supporting the franchisees. The franchisee is the "local hero" who adapts to the local consumer demands.
- Better revenue model. A franchisee joins a brand because they can benefit from the brand's name recognition. National marketing campaigns are carried out, and the franchisee engages in local marketing. This creates a win-win combination. As a result, a franchisee can generate higher turnover than they would as an independent operator. Additionally, they benefit from purchasing advantages that they may not achieve on their own. There are even more benefits to mention.
- The management of personnel. Achieving growth through owned branches involves more staff. However, managing staff remotely is a challenging task. In a franchise model, the staff are under the franchisee's management. The franchisee can take immediate action in cases of illness, leave, or other special situations.
Besides these four advantages, there are many other benefits to mention. But do you still have doubts about whether starting a franchise is the right choice? Consider our Franchise Discovery session.
Starting a franchise
You currently own a successful business with one or more locations. You are convinced that franchising is the solution for successful growth. The choice to start a franchise is an obvious one. Your organization has the potential to expand and serve more customers in the country. It may also be that you have initially achieved this growth through your own locations but now realize that the workforce and central organization have become too large. This results in a loss of flexibility within the organization.
We assist starting organizations with good preparation. This means we assess whether a hard, soft franchise, or perhaps the licensing model is suitable for your organization. We help you with planning, financial calculations, the manual, the legal package, and coaching in the startup phase.
